
HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone used to stimulate the production and release of eggs for fertility. As with all prescription medications, side effects may occur while using HCG.

Side Effects
The most common side effects while using HCG is headache, restlessness, irritability, edema (swelling), depressio and breast tenderness and/or swelling. Rash, inflammation or irritation at the injection site can also occur.
Serious Side Effects
HCG has the potential to cause serious side effects. If an allergic reaction occurs, causing hives (swollen, itchy rash), breathing difficulties and swelling in the face, lips, tongue and/or throat, contact a health care professional immediately.
Drug Interactions
When administering HCG with other medications, an interaction can occur causing adverse reactions or reducing the effectiveness of medication. Inform the physician if taking any over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements.
Precaution
Before starting HCG treatments, inform the doctor of any pre-existing conditions including thyroid disorder, ovarian cyst, cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, epilepsy, migraines and asthma. Testing and dose adjustment may be required for these conditions.
Warning
HCG has been reported to cause a life-threatening condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Symptoms of this condition include severe pelvic pain, swelling of extremities, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. This is not a complete list of side effects; medical attention should be sought immediately.
